Getting out of Yangon, Myanmar

getting out of yangon, myanmar

We booked a day tour to get out of the city and have a local show us the traditions and norms of this beautiful country. Little did we know that we would be so lucky as to have Zaw Min Hlaing show us around and completely blow our minds.

The tour started with a drive out of the city to see a water pagoda. See the post on Golden Pagodas for those pics. It was the first time we dared to eat street food, thanks to Zaw: coconut, sugarcane juice and some sugarcane sweets you eat with the coconut which completely changes its taste. I cannot remember how, but it was delicious.

From there we drove back to the port of Myanmar, where we took a ferry to Dala, located in the south of the city (population 200.000; literally takes you back in time to tiny huts and no cars). I absolutely loved it here. Bike rickshaws took us around the area and made some stops at local family businesses. The best slow travel form ever.

People are just wonderful in Myanmar – would you let a stranger into your house?
