Looking at Burmese Life

Looking at Burmese Life

I found it hard to believe that Yangon is a city of 5 million people. I still do. I found myself comparing Myanmar to India a lot. In contrast to Indian cities there is an even balance between men and women. It does feel like Myanmar is 50 years behind the rest of Asia - the reason I wanted to come here in the first place.

I am deeply in love with Southeast Asia – not sure there is a way to explain it easily. I guess that is what is special about this thing called love.

It must be because I grew up in Asia and it just feels, smells familiar. There is no other way I can see such beauty in such imperfection. So different to anywhere else. It is sad to realise how quickly we forgot what we experienced. Then again it is 20+ years ago.

Life is very slow during the day, picks up at night, when the temperature drops. It feels like everything happens outside. No wonder at 34°C. Nights go down to 15°C in January.

I rarely had such a desire to explore peoples homes. From the outside they look so different to what we call home in the western world. People here seem to spend much less time inside.

As much as Myanmar is behind the modern world and so beautifully basic, if you look closely, the digital connection through smartphones and the internet is just as present.
