Revisiting Kuala Lumpur

From age 8 to 10 I lived in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. On my way to Australia I decided to come back and see what has happened, how it has changed, go down memory lane. When my family and I lived there the Petronas Twin Towers were being built, the highest buildings in the world at the time. They now blend into the skyline and are unfortunately closely surrounded by other skyscrapers, which makes it harder to see the beauty of the towers from all corners of the city. I could not stop looking up at them, especially at night. They look like bright shining stars made up of tiny crystals.

My Dad and I stayed in the same hotel we had stayed in when we first moved to KL. My Mum dug up old photos of us there. Not much has changed except the surroundings and the name of the hotel. We went to Bukit Kiara, where we used to live to find our house on sale. For a second we dreamed about how it would be to come back.

Kuala Lumpur is a melting pot of Malay, Chinese and Indian people. The city centre, Little India and China Town were the most impressive and diverse areas we visited.  A lot of high rise buildings are empty because apparently Chinese people are buying flats in KL and leaving them empty to sell them as unused flats a couple of years down the line.

We booked a day trip to get out of the city and explore areas we knew from back in the days.
